Dental Varnish Program
Shatoya Atkins

Dental Varnish
Dental Varnish is a sticky material that is painted onto the child's
teeth by a doctor or nurse. The varnish will strengthen the teeth
and help prevent cavities. The varnish will be visible on the childs
teeth until it is brushed away the next morning.
This preventive fluoride varnish application can be given to
children from 6 months to 3 years of age.

Program Details
Currently dental varnish is offered at Granville Vance Public
Health Department (GVPH) but the procedure is done
sporadically. GVPH receives $52 for every procedure performed.
NC Pediatrics Associates is the only other practice in the county
that offers Dental Varnish.
Goal of Program: GVPH Health Department wants to increase the
number of patients that receive dental varnish. This is the goal
because it can generate more revenue and is a start towards open
access initiative.
