I.

The diameter of the pipe at B is 10 feet, and the pressure at B is -5 feet of water. The diameter
of the line A is 9 feet. The turbine output required is 5000 horsepower for power generation.
(Assume a constant efficiency of 91%, and neglect friction and entrance losses). What is the
pressure at A when the water surface behind the dam is at Elevation 850?
II. The pipe system are all cast iron with f=0.02. if the flow is 0.6 cu.m per sec. what would be the
diameter of a single pipe from B to C such that it replaces pipes 2, 3 and 4 without altering the
capacity for the same head loss from A to D.
PIPE LENGTH DIAMETER
1 900m. 600mm.
2 1050m. 350mm.
3 750m. 300mm.
4 900m. 400mm.
5 1500m. 750mm.
III. You are asked to design a pump which is to supply fireflow to a hydrant by way of a 6 diameter
ductile iron pipe with roughness coefficient f = 0.025, and is 800 feet long. Connect to the fire
hydrant is a cotton-rubber lined fire hose 2 inches in diameter (f = 0.018) The hose is 300 feet
long and terminates in a nozzle with a tip diameter of 1 inches, and C = Cv = 0.97, C being
coefficient of discharge and Cv is coefficient of velocity. The nozzle is at an elevation 25 feet
higher than the pump. Assume the pressure loss in the hydrant of (2psi)
