MOVING TO THE CITY
From the countryside to the city
It is well-known that cities attract, every year, more and more people from rural areas. This
phenomenon is directly related to the transition to a modern economy, which usually concentrates
the demand of labor force in urban areas, and was particularly relevant during the Age of
Industrialisation.
The reasons for moving to the city are diverse, but the aim to get a job and improve one's living
standards are the main ones. At present, it is essential to have a job to make a living, so if most of
positions are based in urban areas, one is very likely to end up living in one major city. It also must
be noted that life is easier in cities, mainly due to public services which are provided there. In
addition, the range of cultural, entertainment and educational activities that is offered is
significantly wider than the one in the countryside.
However, cities also imply disadvantages such as high noise levels and and fumes especially in
overcrowded areas. One also lives at a fast pace in the city, which may even stress those who are
used to it and undoubtedly affects health. Generally, most of people cope with these, but they might
turn into a nighmare for some people. As humans, every one of us longs for contact with mother
Nature and often unconsciously looks for it.
Obviously, policies will tend to address the previous issues and cities will become more
environmental-friendly and pleasant in the future, with more green areas and renewable energy
systems. Several steps to improve their condition have recently been taken in many cities around the
globe and many starting projects already show revolutionary designs of sustainable cities.
