To Stretch or Not To Stretch?

What Is The Best Answer To That
Question?
To Stretch Of Course!

TENSEGRITY & THE BODY

The body is a complex inter-connected tensional network which consists of
bones, muscles and fascia. These components work together in order to carry

out daily tasks and movements such as walking from one point to another, and

the intelligent Buckminster Fuller was the individual who created the term.

REDUCES THE CHANCE FOR INJURY.

DEFINITION

INCREASES FLEXIBILITY.
PROVIDES ELASTIC ENERGY.
INCREASES CIRCULATION.

What is Tensegrity?

The body is a system that is

maintained by tensile (stretch)
forces rather than compressive
forces. Sure the body may seem to
be like a stack of bricks where the
bones are piled on top of one
another holding it together, yet it is
the muscles and fascia that provide
a stretch, intertwining around bones
keeping the structural integrity.

Have you ever wondered why
drinking plenty of water is so
important? Well our bodies are
made up of a large amount of water,
and with the Tensegrity principle in
mind, water allows for tissues to stay
healthy and perform movements in a
fluid type motion. By keeping the
tissues hydrated, it allows for better
ranges of motion and prevents
tissue stiffness across joints.

Bones Held Together by Tissues

Sure moving around every day by taking a
brisk walk or even a light jog is beneficial
for your health, but sometimes that is not
enough. To keep the principle of Tensegrity
relevant, individuals must practice moving
their body into positions that they are not
normally used to.

By moving the body in many different
positions, tissues that are not usually
active, hydrated, and stretched now can get
these benefits as well as the tissues that
are mainly used.
AGING DOES NOT EQUAL STIFNESS
A common aspect with modern society is
that many people work desk type jobs,
which promotes inactive individuals. There
was a belief that as people got older they
became stiffer, however this is true to a
certain point. The main contribution to
stiffness is inactivity and that is a variable
one can control.

Figure 1. Above is a Tensegrity model which can represent the body, where the
dowels are the bones floating within the elastic bands that are the muscles and fascia
holding it all together.
