ACTIVE TRANSPORT

Moves

molecules across the cell membrane

from an area of lower concentration to an
area of higher concentration
Requires energy (ATP)
Goes up or against the concentration
gradient

ACTIVE TRANSPORT
3

types
Cell membrane pumps
Endocytosis
Exocytosis

CELL MEMBRANE PUMPS

Sodium-Potassium

Pump
Pumped in opposite directions across the
membrane building up a chemical and
electrical gradient for each
Na+ leaves and K+ comes into the cell
Used to drive other transport processes
Ex. In nerve cells used to spread electrical
signals that travel along nerves

ENDOCYTOSIS
Process

of taking in materials into the cell by

pockets or folding of the cell membrane
2 types
Phagocytosispseudopods bring food into cell
Pinocytosisliquids brought in by
vesicles
Receptor mediatedbring in certain
materials

EXOCYTOSIS
Process of taking material out of the cell by pockets
(vesicles)
Opposite of endocytosis

THE LION PROBLEM

How do you get the lions into the bag?

Materials:
1 plastic shopping bag
1 pair of scissors
String
Lions

Here are the rules:

The lions must enter through a solid part of the bag.
The inside of the bag may not be directly open to the external
environment.
The lions entering the bag must remain clustered together.
You may work with your hands in the bag to act as the inside
of the cell.
