PROBLEM SET ON NEWTONS LAWS OF MOTION

(To be discussed on Monday, October 13, 2014)
1) Two objects whose masses are 5.0 kg and 10.0 kg are suspended by the strings as in Figure 1. Find the tension in
each string.

5.0 kg

10.0 kg

2) A mass of 8.0 kg and another of 12.0 kg are suspended by a string on either side of a frictionless pulley. Find the
acceleration of each mass.
3) An eraser is pressed against a vertical blackboard with a horizontal force of 10 N. The coefficient of static friction
between eraser and blackboard is 0.20. Find the force parallel to the blackboard required to move the eraser.
4) A sled slides down a snow covered hill at a constant speed. If the hillside is 100 above the horizontal, what is the
coefficient of kinetic friction between the runners of the sled and the snow?
5) A box slides down a frictionless plane that makes an angle of 350 with the horizontal. A horizontal force of half the
boxs weight presses the box against the plane. What is the boxs acceleration?
6) In the toy known as Newtons cradle, steel balls are suspended by fine threads from a wooden frame. In a
particular specimen, each ball has a mass of 50 gm and the threads each make an angle of 200 to the vertical.
Assuming that the ball is not moving. What forces are acting on it?
7) A mother tows her daughter on a sled on level ice. The friction between the sled and the ice is negligible, and the
tow rope makes an angle of 400 to the horizontal. The combined mass of the sled and the child is 25 kg. If the sled
accelerates at 1 m/s2, calculate the tension in the rope. What is the normal force exerted by the ice? (Consider a
child and sled as single particle)
