ABSTRACT

This experiment was carried out to determine the change of standard Gibbs free energy for
the decomposition of sodium hydrogen carbonate from the change of standard enthalpy and
the change of standard entropy. In order to determine the change of standard Gibbs free
energy, students are required to record the temperature changes in the double-walled vacuum
stainless steel calorimeter due to the reaction between sodium hydrogen carbonate with the
sulphuric acid. The whole procedure was repeated once more by using 3.0 to 3.5 gram of
sodium carbonate. From the data collected, a graph of temperature against time was plotted.
With that, the corrected temperature change (T) was given off by ___ C. The change of
