Sentence Types

Simple Sentence
A simple sentence expresses one idea.
Also called independent clauses.
Contains a subject and a verb.
Ex. : 1. Some students like to study in the
morning.
2. Alicia and Mary play basketball every
afternoon.

Complex Sentence
Contains two independent clauses which joined together by
a coordinator.
The coordinators are : For
And
(FANBOYS)
Nor
But
Or
Yet
So

Ex. : 1. Most people use their ears for hearing the car motor,
but deaf people feel vibrations.
2. I tried to speak Spanish and my friend tried to speak
English.

It has an independent clause joined by one or


more dependent clauses.
Always has a subordinator such as because,
since, after, although, when.
Or Relative pronoun : that, who, which.
Ex. : 1. When he handed in his homework, he
forgot to give the teacher the last page.
2. The students are studying because they
have a test tomorrow.
