Alcohol and Phenol Reactions

1. Solubility in water
Into a test tube, add 0.5 mL or 0.2 grams of each compound alcohols and phenols. Then add 2
ml of water into each test tube, shake and observe the results.
2. Reaction with sodium metal
Place 1-2 ml of each alcohol / phenol (0.1 g solid substance is heated in order to melt)
Add a small piece of sodium metal into each test tube. After that add to the solution, one drop
of phenolphthalein indicator and write the observations.
3. Reaction with sodium hydroxide
Into different test tubes, put 0.5 ml, or 0.2 grams of each alcohol compound. Furthermore,
add 2-3 ml of 10% NaOH into each test tube, shake and observe. Write observations.
4. Lucas test
Add 1 ml of lucas reagent into several test tubes. next, add 5 drops of alcohol. Then, shake and
record the time required by the mixture to become cloudy or split into two parts.
Alcohol to be tested : primary alcohol, secondary alcohol, and tertiary alcohol.
Lucas Reagent : 340 grams of dried ZnCl2 solution in 230ml cold concentrated HCl while cooled
in ice water.
5. Oxidation with bichromate (BORDWELL-WELLMAN test)
Enter each 1 ml of pure acetone in a different test tube. Then, into each test tube add one
drop or 10 mg of crystals alcohol to be tested, shake until the solution became clear. Then,
add one drop of Bordwell-Wellman reagent. Shake and observe. Write the observations.
Alcohol to be tested include: alcohol primary, secondary, and tertiary.
Bordwell-Welllman reagent : 25 grams K2Cr2O7 solution in 25 ml of concentrated H2SO4.
Then dilute with 75 ml of distilled water
6. Reaction of phenol with iron (III) chloride
In some test tubes, dilute each of the crystals or 1-2 drops of the compound to be tested in 5
ml of water. (if it does not dissolve, add a little dioxane). Furthermore, in each test tube add 12 drops of FeCl3 solution, shake and observe the results.
