The American Guide to Westward Expansion
(Same as above.)
Introduction (10 pts)
Welcome. We have just been accepted into the Atlanta Historical Society and we have been asked to do
something educational for interests in the Westward Expansion that took place in the 1800s in the United States
of America. For this, it has been decided that we are too create a website expressing this topic to the utmost
detail. I hope to excavate the interests and delve deeper into our countrys history.
Our AKS standards provide for the significant factors that affected Georgias development during the
growth of the U.S. between 1789 and 1840. This will be incorporated in the project under 4 main subtopics36a, b, c and d. This project is of great value. It can really benefit you in your knowledge and you will truly be
able to understand what the U.S did in order to become the big nation it is today.
Essential/Driving Research Question (5 pts)
1. What problem or issues have you discovered that needs to be solved? I have discovered that many 8th
grade students are unaware of the growth of the U.S. as it expanded west and caused the removal of
many Native American tribes.
2. What proposals do you have in order to help solve the identified issues? I have developed a proposal to
help students understand the history of Westward Expansion by building a website.

Standards (30 pts)

8th Grade Georgia Studies
Category- Ex. Analyze the effect of Westward Expansion on Native American groups
1. Standards / AKS (write out entire standard that fits under category)

Explain significant factors that affected the development of Georgia as part of the
growth of the United States between 1789 and 1840 (GPS) (8SS_E2007-36)
36a - analyze the establishment and growth of the University of Georgia, Louisville, and the spread of Baptist and Methodist
churches
36b - evaluate the impact of land policies pursued by Georgia to include the head-right system, land lotteries, and the Yazoo
land fraud
36c - defend how technological developments impacted Georgias growth to include the cotton gin and railroads
36d - analyze the events that led to the removal of the Creeks and Cherokees including the roles of Alexander McGillivray,
William McIntosh, Sequoyah, John Ross, the Dahlonega Gold Rush, Worcester v. Georgia, Andrew Jackson, John Marshall,
and the Trail of tears

VOCABUARY: In every single project make sure you ALWAYS list the vocabulary (THIS SHOULD BE
WORDS YOU LEARNED THROUGH YOUR RESEARCH.
The Headright System, The Yazoo Land Fraud of 1795, Land Lotteries, James Jackson, George Matthews,
University of Georgia, The Gate City, Louisiana Purchase, Public Domain, Eli Whitney, Cyrus McCormick,
Panic of 1837/ Depression, Transportation/ Plank Roads/ Turnpikes, Ferries, Slave Trade, Cash Crops,
Railroads, Subsistence Agriculture, Commercial Agriculture, Samuel Slater, Religion, William Lumpkin
Intended Outcome (10 pts)
I hypothesize that our vocabulary and knowledge will increase. Creating your own website according to the
AKS strand will help you understand the roles that different people played in the development of the United
States of America. We will also learn different types of techniques that were used during this age of growth and
development. You will learn a lot of activities that the U.S. was involved in and how our thirst for more land
hurt others along the way. Also, these notes can help you in your future for any reference that you need. You
can also help others and teach people of your newfound information. Finally, I hope that 8th grade students
understand the vocabulary and how it ties into the Westward Expansion.
Group Member and Job Assignment (10 pts)
Rohan Patwardhan- I will create the Westward Expansion page on my website, and I will create 4 pages for
36a, 36b, 36c, and 36d. Under each subtopic, I will put explicit information on each topic under each subtopic.

(Everything above this line should be completed on the first week of a project; everything below the line should
be completed by the day the project is due.)
Result (10 pts)
This project was really fun. I accomplished a lot from it. I got to learn the history of Georgia and I got to
learn some major events that occurred during that time period. The result of my project was 4 mini topics, each
with some major topics underneath it based on each AKS strand. Therefore, my final result exactly matched my
intended result because I was able to map out all of the details. My vocabulary and knowledge both increased.
These notes also helped in my test.
My websites information is useful for many things such as studying, taking notes, and just general
information. It can be viewed by anyone, because there are no limitations. Under the project tab, there is a
timeline project tab, and underneath it is a Georgia and Westward Expansion tab, which has 4 tabs. As I said
before, this is really useful and can be used by anyone. It can help a lot.
Reflection (10 pts)
Due to this project, I was able to fully learn the AKS: Explain significant factors that affected the
development of Georgia as part of the growth of the United States between 1789 and 1840 (GPS) (8SS_E200736). Under that, I mainly learned: 36d - analyze the events that led to the removal of the Creeks and Cherokees
including the roles of Alexander McGillivray, William McIntosh, Sequoyah, John Ross, the Dahlonega Gold
Rush, Worcester v. Georgia, Andrew Jackson, John Marshall, and the Trail of tears. For example, I didnt know
that there was a headright system and that there were land lotteries. Also I didnt know that there were 2 treaties
that the Creek signed in order to get peace. These were all new to me, until I finished my project. This project
helped by increasing my vocabulary and knowledge and it helped me when I studied for my test. However, this
project took a very long time to create. Sometimes, there were technical problems and I was unable to finish on
time. Other than that, it was great. In the future, I will work faster and not waste any time. This project is similar
to the other Timeline Project tabs that we have been doing before this project. It is in exactly the same format as
before, just a different topic.
