A New Major May Be Coming to Campus

ORLANDO, FL The Writing Department at UCF may be offering a new undergraduate degree soon.
UCF officials are proposing to expand the already existent Writing and Rhetoric minor into a major, as
well.
The major falls in line with UCFs strategic goals, including:

Offering the best undergraduate education in Florida

Providing international focus
Being Americas leading partnership university

The major would offer opportunities to prepare for writing-centered jobs and civic opportunities.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that employment opportunities in careers such as copy writers,
freelance writers, and editors are increasing not only in Florida but nationwide. The major would be the
first of its kind in the state.
The new Writing and Rhetoric minor is continuing to grow at a rapid pace, and combined with the English
Writing major totals more than 150 students.
The Writing and Rhetoric major is expected to grow exponentially upon creation, totaling up to 160
students in just the first four years of existence.
A poll of UCF students in first-year writing classes indicated that 84 students would definitely or
probably declare their major as Writing and Rhetoric. Another 236 students said that they would
consider the major.
The proposed major would consist of 36 credit hours within the department. Three classes would introduce
students to rhetoric, writing, and literacy. Students would complete a capstone course in which students
would complete their e-portfolios and conduct research about jobs.
Two courses would offer a background of the field, and four courses would teach writing in education,
professions, and civics. Two more classes in writing electives would be required.
