Topic: Generosity, Contemplative Practice, and the Practice of Law
One byproduct of a sustained contemplative practice is generosity, the giving of oneself where appropriate, without
expectation. This month, our group will discuss how cultivation of contemplative practice may assist with developing this
characteristic of generosityin any of several sensesand how it may take effect in the lawyer's professional life, and whether
that is appropriate. The group will first do traditional breathing and walking meditation practices together. Then a brief talk will
be followed by discussion. Those attending are encouraged to contribute from their own experience and to bring their
questions.
Facilitator: Marc Poirier is Professor of Law and Martha Traylor Research Scholar at Seton Hall University School of Law in
Newark, NJ. He teaches in the areas of property, environmental and natural resources law, and law and sexuality. He has
been a Zen practitioner for more than thirty years, and is authorized as a lay teacher in the Ordinary Mind School of Zen
founded by Charlotte Joko Beck.
