When direct current is passing through

an aqueous solution of sodium chloride
which is totally dissociated as Na and Cl
ions..
ions
Chlorine is g
generated at the anode:
anode:
2Cl-

Cl2

+ 2e-

Process
Cathode: Hydrogen is evolved and
Cathode:
hyroxyle ions are formed at the cathode
2H2O + 2eH2 + 2OHChlorine and hydroxyle ions react to
form hydrochlorite and chloride ions
ions::
Cl2 + 2OH-

ClO- + Cl- + H2O

Process
The hydrogen is vented to atmosphere
through
g individual stack for each electrolyzer.
y
Each stack is equipped with temperature
detector, When high temperature alarm is
activated, pneumatic valve is opened and
nitrogen is injected into the stack to
extinguish the flame and DC power to the
unit is cut.

Process
Out line of each electrolyzer is equipped by
alarm and switches temperature
p
indicator.
When out let temperature overcome 45
45c, the
alarm come on control board and rectifier are
tripped off.
The 2 hypochlorite storage tank are vertical
concrete reservoirs with geometric capacity
470 m each and working volume of 347
347..5 m
each.

Process
The storage tank are purged with air in order
to prevent accumulation of explosive mixture
(H /O ).
The purging air is delivered by air blower (
one stand by). The purging air is vented to
atmosphere through chimneys on tank roof.
Stand by is automatically started when one
failed and/or purging air is reach minimum
minimum.

Acid Cleaning
Electrolyzers must be cleaned periodically by
acid solution.
Acid conc. ((30
30--33 %) is diluted with seawater
in the tank to 5%, then two pumps (one stand
by ) are used to inject and circulate diluted
acid in electrolyzer until it cleaned.
Acid solution is considered spent when its
conc Reach 2% , because it reduced
conc.
cleaning efficiency.
