Title: Benefits of Marijuana in Medical Field

Introduction
I.

Prescription drugs kill about 100,000 people in the world each year. Off the top of
your head, do you know how many deaths are caused by using marijuana, either
medicinally or recreationally?

II.

According to Dr. Lester Grinspoon, a professor emeritus at Harvard Medical

School, "There are no deaths from cannabis use. Anywhere. You can't find one".

III.

Today I would like to inform you the benefits of marijuana in medical perspective
of the so called weed.

Body
I.

Medical cannabis or medical marijuana refers to the use of cannabis and its
constituent cannabinoids, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol
(CBD), as medical therapy to treat disease or alleviate symptoms. These two
compounds are the reason why marijuana or cannabis is legalized in 20 states in
America.

A. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which has pain relieving properties also effects include
relaxation, alteration of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses, fatigue, and appetite
stimulation.
1. A pharmaceutical tetrahydrocannabinol, known by its name dronabinol, is available
by prescription in the U.S.A and Canada under the brand name Marinol.

B. Cannabidiol (CBD) is considered to have a wider scope of medical applications

than tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabidiol which seems to impact the brain with its
relaxation effect.
1. An orally administered liquid containing CBD has received orphan drug status in
the USA, for use as a treatment for dravet syndrome, under the brand name
Epidiolex.

II.

Medical Marijuana have many uses and widely being researched as effective in
medical field. The active chemical can be used:
A. Marijuana use can be used to treat and prevent the eye disease glaucoma,
which increases pressure in the eyeball, damaging the optic nerve and
causing loss of vision. Marijuana decreases the pressure inside the eye,
according to the National Eye Institute: Studies in the early 1970s showed
that marijuana, when smoked, lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) in people
with normal pressure and those with glaucoma. These effects of the drug
may slow the progression of the disease, preventing blindness.
B. Marijuana use can prevent epileptic seizures, a 2003 study showed that
Robert J. DeLorenzo, of Virginia Commonwealth University, gave marijuana
extract and synthetic marijuana to epileptic rats. The drugs rid the rats of the
seizures for about 10 hours. Cannabinoids like the active ingredients in
marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) control seizures by binding to the brain
cells responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation. The
findings were published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental
Therapeutics.

III.

More shocking uses are also include:

A. It also decreases the symptoms of a severe seizure disorder known as
Dravets Syndrome.
1. Figi family, who treats their five-year-old daughter using a medical
marijuana strain high in cannabidiol and low in THC. Their daughter,
Charlotte, has Dravet Syndrome, which causes seizures and severe
developmental delays. According to the National Organization for Rare
Disorders, the drug has decreased her seizures from 300 a week to just
one every seven days. Forty other children in the state are using the same
strain of marijuana to treat their seizures and it seems to be working. The
doctors who recommended this treatment say that the cannabidiol in the

plant interacts with the brain cells to quiet the excessive activity in the
brain that causes these seizures.
B. CBD may help prevent cancer from spreading, researchers at California
Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reported in 2007.Cannabidiol stops
cancer by turning off a gene called Id-1, the study, published in the journal
Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. The researchers studied breast cancer
cells in the lab that had high expression levels of Id-1 and treated them with
cannabidiol. After treatment the cells had decreased Id-1 expression and were
less aggressive spreaders.

Conclusion
I.

Believe it: In 10,000 years of known use of cannabis, there's never been a single
death attributed to marijuana.

II.

It's a fact that anyone can die from ingesting too much aspirin, or too much coffee,
or too much wine. Marijuana, on the other hand, medical or not, is not only nonlethal, but likely beneficial.

III.

But be wise that excessive use might have a negatives effect.

IV.

Use wisely and not to be abuse properly and as medical marijuana and we might
save life.
