IERAL GEORGE SKRIMIZEAS ALLSEAS MARINE S.A. ween GENERALMANAGER yg Ese haeee x FILIPINO CREW TO REAP BENEFITS OF NEW EXPANSION PLANS Expansion for Allseas Marine is not a random phenomenon. As! have mentioned in the past, it is an ongoing process based on a meticulously thought-out strategy. Remaining focused ‘on our growth policy has helped us grow in all directions without sacrificing quality or competitiveness. And the benefits of this growth are numerous and concern us ail, whether in Athens or Manila, whether behind a desk or onboard a vessel. In the months to come, we are expected to receive the delivery of two new-built dry bulk vessels and progressively within 2015, two new Utiramaxes, five more Kamsarmaxes and four 1700 TEU container vessels are scheduled to be delivered raising our fleet to a total of 40 vessels! That's an impressive total of 13 new-built vessels. Modern, eco design vessels that will further reduce the average age of our fleet and will increase our competitive advantages. This increase in our fleet is translating into a need for approximately 450 new, competent seafarers required to man these vessels. And that's cause for celebration for the Filipino crew and their families that will join Crewcare and make our expanded family grow. ‘At the same time, we continue to invest heavily into the development of our own crew by sponsoring the career of cadets through our established Cadetship Program. In 2014/15, more than 200 cadets will join the company following our strategic plan to employ onboard each vessel 2 deck cadets, 2 engine cadets and 1 electrician cadet. Our target is to produce a pool of permanent, loyal crew who will provide top-notch services to the company and will receive stability, continuous employment and opportunity for advancement, in return. give and take attitude is indicative of our company’s continuous commitment to the society within which we operate. We care and therefore support the society whose members we employ, whose members we interact with daily, our local communities and the greater society within which our vessels operate and our international brothers and sisters grow and flourish or suffer & perish. We care to give back to society part of the benefit we receive as members of a healthy, prosperous shipping company. We are therefore present to assist our own and the greater society when the need arises, as in the case of the recent typhoon Yolanda, when CrewCare & Allseas in unison demonstrated their compassion and commitment by lending a helping hand to the affected areas. A financially stable company, continuously offering more job and career opportunities to its sea and shore staff, in a safe working environment and a socially responsible organization is what we shall always be striving for. THE LINK | 7 ix RECRUITMENT A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE (Recruitment of Seafarers Has No Secret Ingredient) BY: Michael T. Flores / Recruitment Manager Every dish served on the table of an exquisite restaurant has a secret ingredient. A wide variety and unique kind of spices that makes the food so good, that does not only fills the mouth and the stomach but also satisfies and soothes the soul. ‘Once the food satisfies the senses of the customer's tongues and fills their stomachs with bliss, news spreads like wild fire. People around the community recognizes not only the cozyness of the place but also the uniqueness and taste of the food. People become curious and with a sense of intrigue they come to the place. When they are satisfied they tell and invite their friends to this restaurant. The common people are like seafarers who are very hard to please. They are primadonnas inthe true sense of the word. They are no longer the so called “old school’ seafarers whom like me, a former seafarer, used to queue inside their company’s office asking for the mercy of the Crewing Manager for my line up. At this point of time seamen are already good researchers and listeners. When they seek for a job especially Senior officers . they only go to one place, that's Kalaw in Luneta the “heart” and “center” of recruitment for seafarers. Not only that they seek for employment but they also learn to mingle, befriend Recruitment Managers/Officers of different manning agencies. They are always eaves dropping and listens intently and asks the company’s addresses, their needs and what the company can offer..Like my example, the restaurant, Kalaw St in Manila , which is the center for recruitment has a wide variety of manning agencies, catering from the highest to the lowest wages in the market for all types of vessels, and with all sorts of benefits and promises alike. There are only 6 basic things which is a common knowledge a Manning Agency should cater and address in order to minimize the daily grind and dilemma of sourcing qualified officers and this is no secret at all. These are the most common questions a seafarer will ask, especially the Top Four Seniors officers during Recruitment: 1. How much is the sal 2. What are the Benefits? (Health Card, Rejoining Bonus, Standby Pay etc.) 3. What type and how old is your ship? ‘4. How long is the duration of your contract? 5. Is your allotment not delayed? 6. Do you accept recommendee/s ? THE LINK | 8 RECRUITMENTE In my modest years of experience in the Manning/Shipping industry, | experienced the hardest lessons, learned from it and grow. That is when seeking a company to represent, and that company should be able to address the 6 six basic questions mentioned above. Not only they adaress these above integrity whose name is not blemished or tarnished with controversies, Like the saying that goes "No Man is an Island’ it simply means that there are no such thing as the best Recruitment Managers or Officers in the industry, It is a fact and an open book, that we will only survive this battle through networking and _heip of our friends in the industry. A wide range of networks of friends, who are always there to assist and lend there helping nands anytime of tne day.tt doesn't matter if it's during Weekaays, week ends of even hollaays. But again these fact does not justify the reality if the company we are representing does not have the integrity and cannot addresses the most basic questions including the support and motivation of our President and General Manager and the full cooperation of the whole TEAM and foremost our Principal. For that | am proud that | belong in the ‘Crewcare family. A company whois straight and with @ good reputation in the industry and heads up, integrity. A Management who not only supports the welfare of her seafarers and families but also her employees. A Boss who supports every individual and isnot hesitant to lead, speak, motivate and mould the people around the office, and recognizes the potential of every employee A friend once told me, be an "Empty Glass" because when your glass is full there is no room to fill it in with water. Have an open mind for corrections and criticisms, for this is the true essence of humility. It will be our guide in life for we will never succeed by doing it our way. Courage and poise under pressure is always the key in addressing any situation. We gain respect not only from our colleagues, our Boss but also with the seafarers who joins our company. So there is no secret in the recruitment of seafarers, it's the honesty in dealing with them. Always aim to work smarter not harder. We are not ‘only representing our company, our Boss but our selves> We are always told to be focused, smart and ‘open minded. In conclusion, 1 nave two friends from another manning agency, — two former Captains who curlousty asked me, what fs your “style” in recruitment of seafarers In your company? And my reply was simple, Sir, there Is no secret_ in my Recrultment, the truth of the matter Is “1 HAVE FRIENDS LIKE YOU IN THE INDUSTRY WHO IS ALWAYS THERE FOR ME AND HELPS ME IN OUR URGENT NECESSITIES”, ee THE LINK | 9 ANTHONY SPANOS Senior assessor European Foundation for Quality Management Scientific advisor of the Hellenic Management Association and coordinator for the EFQM marine framework GRI G4 competent, Assessor EBEN Cyprus SUSTAINABILITY AND EXCELLENCE ALL IN ONE PACKAGE + The EFOM marine Framework by the Hellenic Management Association and the EFOM ‘The Marine sector is the most over standardized sector of economy as well as one of the two steam engines of Greek entrepreneurship Along with Tourism. As an initially non-Marine Excellence expert I have always been amazed by the complexity and standardization of the Marine Sector. ‘One has to tackle standards sa ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18001, MLC, TMSA, ISM code, including demands of the flag, requirements of the port authorities, demanding vettings by the charterers, strict preventive maintenance, recruiting and training of the sailors, follow up on latest technology evolutions on communication, environment, speed, fuel economy, safety and an endless array of other requirements. A holistic model which is able to provide a fully detailed “picture” and the full scope of a Marine management company, is though missing. All existing standards focus on very specific management areas sa Safety. Environment, Sea worthiness etc. The European Excellence Model of the EFOM is since 1992 such a holistic model. Born designed and sponsored by the European Union, is the most comprehensive and well known management model in the World. THE LINK |10 THE SEEMINGLY MINOR ITEMS ‘that may sometimes cause a catastrophe. BY: George Kavonis Manager Technical Department (Allseas Marine S.A.) Behind this simple narrative subject description a tremendous hazard could be hidden that we are obliged to remind all seafarers of, as sometimes itis a seemingly minor thing, such as a mechanical deterioration or electrical comperent malfunction thet can lead to a major catastrophe. We're preity sure that over thelr past seagoing experience, all people in the shipping community have faced such examples, regardless of type of vessels or route tracing. It is also true that taking the age of a vessel as a rule of thumb, cannot be considered a full-proof safety parameter for alerting seagoing personnel. There have been new building vessels faced with main engine throttle failure at their maiden voyage, due, for ‘example, to the failure of one small drive belt connecting the console throttle laver and its components toa malfunctioning electrical potentiometer. Movement of the throttle causes the potentiometer to move and creates @ variable signal to other controls which manages engine speed, When the belt falls the control from the engine ‘oom console Is lost. Keeping minimum spares on board or assigning skilful engineers cannot minimize the risks of such failure, which may lead to loss of propulsion under unknown seagoing conditions. Other examples: A contact in a small electrical relay and part of the autopilot system stuck and caused a vessel to go hard to port at 24 knots; Three of four nuts on 3 propeller shatt seal loosened, want unnoticed and caused flooding of the machinery space vessel; [Aire chafed and grounded out cutting power to critical combustion controls while a vessel was at the dock, but not long after transiting 2 narrow harbor entrance. All the above are simple hazards and as a prudent management company we have to recognize and identify every single failure mode that could possibiy impact the vessel's propulsion, power generation system or steering system and developing a comprehensive preventative maintenance system for such systems, equipment and components is 2 very complex tark. In addition to the above it becomes an obligation of all owner operators, marine engineers, seafarers and others particularly onboard or associated with vessels, to think about and identify those high risk components which If a failure or malfunction occurs will result in a casualty. (Specifically components subject to gradual wear and tear or loosening should have priority for review.) Once identifying such components, the responsible personnel should refer to their respective manuals and determine proper maintenance requirements as well as take the necessary steps to prevent 2 future problem with the aim of reducing risk. Following proper procedure and reporting the checklist implemented by company's policy, properly updated, Increases the maintenance scheme’s efficiency in the future. However, addressing additional risks may be achleved through a proper risk analysis procedure which leads to additional controls and more efficient supporting actions, Safeguarding the lives of seafarers at sea at all times should be our first and last unnegotiable priority. The aim is to develop a strategic vision for navigation, to integrate existing and new navigational tools, in particular electronic tools, in an all-embracing system that will contribute to enhanced navigational safety (with all the positive repercussions this will have on maritime safety ‘overall and environmental protection) while simultancously reducing the burden on the navigator. ‘AAs the basic technology for such an innovative step is alrcady available, the challenge lies in ensuring the availability of all the other components of the system, including electronic navigational charts, and in using it effectively in order to simplify, to. the benefit of the mariner, the display of the occasional local navigational environment. E-navigation would thus incorporate new technologies in a structured way and ensure that their use is compliant with the various navigational communication technologies and services that are already available, providing an overarching, accurate, secure and cost-effective system with the potential to provide global coverage for ships of all sizes.
