The Question

A transformer with electrical winding is shown the in figure below. The electrical
winding is carrying current and is at a uniform temperature of 320 C. The
electrical winding protrudes out of the transformer and is enclosed by a AISI 314
steel tube of cylindrical shape and length 100 mm. The inner and outer radii of
the steel tube are 10, 30 mm respectively. The outer surfaces (lateral and cross
sections) of the tube are exposed to air at 25 C and h = 10 W/m2K. The base
temperature of the transformer is 250 C. Assuming steady state conditions, and
neglecting the length of the electrical winding protruding out of the steel tube.
I . Describe the mathematical approach in detail for obtaining the T profile of the
AISI
314 steel tube
II. List the boundary conditions
III. Plot the temperature profile in the tube
IV. Plot isotherms of any temperature in the tube (if any)
V. Comment on the presence of any adiabatic thermal contour (whether it is
present/absent) and plot it (if present)

ANSWER 1
Discrete solution by FDM
Rectangular cross section of the annular cylinder is chosen
with length as the length of the axis of the tube and width
as thickness of the steel coating.
We form square grids and solve it using the finite difference
method technique.
Then by rotating the rectangle through 360 degrees we get
the exact temperature distributions in the tube.

Boundary Conditions
Temperature along the bottom surface of the rectangle (In contact with the wire)
=320 C
Temperature of the left surface (In contact with base)
= 250 C.
