To: Middle School Families at Brooklyn Ascend From: Janna Genzlinger, Managing Director Re: Safety Memo, Brooklyn Ascend Middle School Dear Brooklyn Ascend families, We would like to share with you a serious safety issue which has arisen in our neighborhood. Yesterday, one of our scholars was robbed by a group of teenagers on her way home from school. After discussing this incident with the police, we have learned that in the last week that there have been several such robberies in the area west of our school in Brownsville. In order to respond to this situation, Officer Barry from the 67th precinct will be attending our November 21st middle school community meeting in order to educate our middle school scholars who may walk home alone. She will instruct the scholars on how to be safe going to and from school. She will be sharing the following safety advice that you can also share with your child if your child is walking home alone: Have more than one safe route for getting home Stay as much as possible in well-lit, well-populated areas Pay attention to your surroundings; in particular dont wear headphones Keep valuables like jewelry and cell phones out of sight Identify safe places to go along your route if you feel frightened We also encourage all families to identify a walking buddy for their students. Should you need assistance in finding a scholar to walk with your child, please reach out to the Program Director, Karenga Arifu (718-913-7347; karenga.arifu@asendlearning.org) and we will help your child find a walking buddy. Sincerely, Janna Genzlinger Managing Director
