Part I: What is the Situation in Ukraine

1. What are the three core factors that led to the chaos, according to
the article?
The first factor was the broken promise. The leader promised
to sign political and trade agreements with the European Union
but when the time came around, he refused to sign. Also there
was a lingering Cold-War era fight between Russia and the
west for influence over countries in Eastern Europe. Last, was
outrage from the people over the way the government was
handling things like protests in the street.
2. Why does Russia feel threatened by Ukraine forming a closer
partnership with Europe?
One reason they feel threatened is because some see as it a
partnership against Russia. Another reason they feel this way
is because they have many things located in Ukraine. For
example they have a fleet in the Black Sea docked in Ukraine.
They also have pipelines that carry Russian natural gas to
customers in Russia.
3. Why did many Ukrainians, especially in the Western part of the
country, want Ukraine to sign political and economic agreements
with the European Union?
They wanted them to sign these agreements because they saw
them as a chance to improve their lives with much needed
reforms especially in economy and the justice system.
4. Why did street protests erupt in November 2013?

The streets erupted when it became clear that Mr.

Yanukovych wasnt moving forward.
5. What were some of the government missteps that helped further
fuel the protests?
One of these thing was the police beating protesters which
prompted the people to seize public buildings and occupy
independence square. Another thing was the ramming through
new laws against free speech and assembly.
6. What additional questions do you have about whats going on in
Ukraine?
