The effective teaching and literacy practices my IMT use is first having goad classroom
management. The students know what he expects every time the step fot in the gym ar the
‘woight room. They are respectful to him and he returns the same respect to them. He has his
‘objectives for the day posted on the board along with a motivational quote which correlates
with a life talk during the class period. He demonstrates and uses visuals when Leaching $0
students can see how to de the exercise properly. He also uses students to do the
demonstrating but only if they are comfortable doing the task. He always the student if they are
okay with it before making them demonstrate in front of the class. There isn’t a lot of literacy
practices in the classroom. He dees use videos to show the stucents why a certain exercise is 1
important to them, An example would be when he was showing the freshman football team
how to clean. it’s an explosive move using a barbell and you use a lot of force to get the bar
from the ground and catch it above your shoulders. My IMT showed the students a video of a
varsity football player using that type of movement during the game and making a good tackle.
Even though it's not a book it's a type of autside source to help the students buy into what he
wanted them to get out of doing the exercise and how it could help them in a game.
My IMT teacher could improve on incorporating mare outside sourees and books into
class. There isn’t atextbook assigned to physical education but he could still se articles and
journals to holp introduce a concept. Physical education doesn't always have to be anti reading
or homework assignments. The teacher will use writing papers as a form of punishment or a
way ta make up an absence. It makes using literacy in the classroom frowned upon, The = L-~
students gravitate away from wanting to read articles in the classroom because they see it as
being in trouble and not a positive thing. He can also make @ word wall fer the students
because they go over so many different concepts from different sports and weight lifting
moves. | think his teaching styles are cffective because almost every student gives him his
undivided attention when he is talking and teaching.
In my own classroom | am going to use magazine and journal articles in my teachings
especially when introducing new sports. There are all different kinds of ranges of students
background knowledge for different sports and assuming students will know about the same
amount of stuff is impossible, | would do a brief history on the sport and how it was invented
and why they started playing. Also before a unit | would have the students create a KWL chart
to see what they already know, what they would want to know, and atthe end of the unit have
‘them fill out what they learned as a way to check for understanding. | could also use it as 2 type
of formal assessment instead of using their skill level as an assessment. I'm going to assign
readings a few times a month to have students learn about different athletes who have made
an impect on society and in people's live and have them discuss what they eauld do to improve
their own lives or help somebody else. | would use literacy to focus more on real life, the stuff
that goes on outside of class and have them read books and magazines about sports, health, or
Whatever interests them along the lines of physical education and physical activity.

Strategy: Word wall
Description: Display of key vocabulary words for a unit or topic. They are displayed on a wall or
board in the classroom, The words can be placed before, during, or after the unit or topic is
‘over. They can be used as a reference for students te make connections during the topic and
also add new words as they continue to learn.
Modifications: It can be turned into a vocabulary tree and students are able to group words
together as they accumulate over the unit. Students can also.create their own word walls and
refer back to it when they are completing out of class work,
Additional Activities: Students can draw pictures associated with the words on the wall to build
better understanding of the words,
‘Thematic Units, Topics or Literature Units: This stratgey can be used in physical education when
intreducing a new sport. It helps students understand key words associated with the spertand
they are able to refer and add new: words to the wall as the unit continues. It can be used in
every content area because key words and elements are a part of every unit.
