Birthday Project
Overview/Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to further our knowledge of creating circuits and to
apply what we just learned about seven-segment displays and K-mapping. I had to use many
things that I have learned throughout the year to complete this project. This project let me get
more hands on experience with Multisim and K-mapping. We had to demonstrate that we could
take the concepts we learned and apply it.

Materials:
Engineering notebook, pen, Multisim, seven-segment display, Mr. Bacher.

Procedure:
I began this project by creating a truth table. The truth table included three inputs,
seven outputs for the display, and my birth date. I then turned the truth table into seven Kmaps for each output. I followed the procedures and turned each K-map into a logic equation.
Next, I used those equations to make a working circuit on Multisim and this circuit showed my
birthday on the seven segment display. After showing that my circuit worked successfully, I was
then able to create a programmable logic circuit. This circuit worked with a real display and this
was the final product.

Concepts:
There were many concepts covered in this project. Creating truth tables and K-mapping
are major concepts. Other concepts include converting K-maps into logic expressions and

turning those into AOI circuits. Finally, using Multisim to create circuits and programmable
logic are concepts.

Summary:
This project gave me extra practice on many concepts we have learned about. I enjoyed
being able to make something that I could actually see on a real seven-segment display. I ran
into a couple problems when creating the K-maps because I was not completely sure that my
logic expressions where correct. After creating my circuit, they turned out to be correct. Other
than that I ran into very few issues with this project. A pro of the birthday project is that it gave
me extra practice. Actually applying concepts to something helps me learn the material much
better. I cannot think of any cons for this project. It ran very smoothly and did not take very
much time.
