Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: The class will first review people from history by watching a YouTube
video. They will then reference pages from If You Grew Up With George Washington. Since they
read this book the day before, they should have some background knowledge. They will use the
images in the book to aid their thinking of how George Washington is influential. The students
will use an excel template provided for them to help them learn how to graph the class favorite
historical figures.

Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

1. Students will then be introduced to the concept of bar graphs by watching the
teacher create an anchor chart with a quick survey of their favorite historical
figures that they have learned so far.
2. Students will then see a model of the proper way to create a bar graph, and then a
model of the incorrect way to create one.

3. Students will be given an excel template with pictures of the different people that
were represented in a survey that will be taken of the class favorite historical
figures.
4. Students will then begin to construct their own graph on their excel template
using the survey information from the anchor chart.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific): I will have the students filling out their bar
graphs and I will observe and walk around as they work. While observing, I will give
students feedback as they complete the activity. This will be student guided, but if
needed, I will assist.

Reteach (alternative used as needed): I will allow extra time while doing the assignment
and students are able to ask me for help while working. When teaching the next lesson, I
will reteach this by doing a bar graph with the entire class instead of a student guided
practice first to make sure that the students truly understand the concept of a bar graph.

Closure: The students will then have to individually assess the bar graph data and name
the historical figure that had the most votes. This will wrap up the lesson and check for
understanding.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation: The students will draw a picture of the historical figure that
had the most votes in the classroom. They will then write a brief description of how they knew
the answer.
______________________________________________________________________
Modifications/Notes:
ESL: Provide more pictures and examples, as well as allow students to work with a partner.
GT: Students will have to write a summary of how the historical figure that they chose is
influential to others.
Special Ed: Students will be able to have a copy of an example to reference to at any time. They
will also be able to ask me or their peers questions, as well as work with a partner if need be.
