Evaluation:
Is this a reliable source of information? Why?
I believe this source of information to be somewhat reliable. The information is very generic
and there is not anything about it to infer that it is not reliable. The source is in English, not
Spanish, and is written well. On the other hand, the website is a WebQuest created by a former
student. For that reason, I believe this source would not be strong enough for supporting
claims. As a lightweight source, it may be acceptable, but never for an extraordinary claim.
Is the author an expert? Credentials?
The author is somewhat of an expert. Jennifer Stoves was a former student and teacher. On
their biography page, it says that graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Masters of
Science in Education. She is a substitute teacher for all subjects at her local school district.
‘What year? Is this the most recent information or is there a reason for using an older resource?
The resource was created July 31, 2009. The information is pretty recent. I do not see a reason
to use an older resource because this one uses active learning. Previous sources use older
textbooks which can be out dated and boring. This source has interesting and engaging
activities that makes learning Spanish fun. The resource is current and students can relate to it.
Original purpose of the resource (inform, persuade, entertain)?
The purpose of the resource is to inform and entertain its readers. It lists common Spanish
greetings and ways to use it in the real world. It has activities which are fun and engaging like
writing a letter to a pen pal in a Spanish country. It teaches beginners who want to learn the
Spanish language in a fun and creative way.
Is there bias? Is it appropriate to have a bias for this material? Does it fit the purpose of the
unit?
There are no signs of bias. It would be inappropriate to have a bias for this material because
Spanish is a language that cannot be changed. It does not require opinions of others. This
source fits the purpose of the unit. The topic was Spanish greetings and common phrases and
this source helps students with both written and oral Spanish while using the Pen Pal activity.
