Over the course of the last several months I have had the pleasure of having Julie Marsh

shadow me in order to learn more about the role of the Instructional Technology Resource
Teacher (ITRT). This internship provided Ms. Marsh with the opportunity to observe the inner
workings of Henrico County Public Schools through the lens of the ITRT and other
administrative roles. Ms. Marsh was able to gain valuable field experience working with
students, teachers, building level administrators, and Central Office staff. This experience has
provided her with over 240 hours of anecdotal as well as hands-on experience. Ms. Marsh was
able to observe and assist me in the following capacity:
Assisting with curriculum and content development
Disseminating information regarding technology resources, emerging technologies, best
practices using technology, and professional development opportunities
Facilitating or conducting technology-related professional development for school staff
Assessing levels of teacher and student technology use and skills
Modeling effective instructional strategies using technology
Serving as a member of the school technology committee
Supporting implementation of the division and state technology plan
Researching use of newer technologies in instruction
Using data to design technology-based instructional strategies
Recommending hardware, software, and related resources
Identifying trends in software, curriculum, teaching strategies, and other educational areas
Creating learning resources for teachers, staff, and students
Serving as a strong advocate for technology integration
Participating in software selection and use
Training teachers to integrate technology and software effectively.
Additionally, Ms. Marsh was able to form relationships and network with a large number of
employees in the school division ranging from classroom teachers, various ITRTs,
administrators, and Central Office staff. These experiences provided her with a sound
understanding of inner workings and politics involved in a diverse school system as Henrico
County and will hopefully prove worthwhile as she pursues a career focused on instructional
technology and leadership.
