Casablanca (1942)

Casablanca is not a film noir, but it reflects many elements of the genre, mainly its setting, mood, cinematic style,
and typical romantic lone hero.
Director: Michael Curtiz
Writer: Julius J. Epstein
Characters: Humphrey Bogart - Rick Blaine, Ingrid Bergman - Ilsa Lund, Paul Henreid - Victor Laszlo, Claude Rains Captain Louis Renault
Period: classical Hollywood cinema (1930s to the 1950s)
Ending: To allay Renault's suspicions, Rick explains he and Ilsa will be leaving for America. When Renault tries to
arrest Laszlo as arranged, Rick forces him at gunpoint to assist in their escape. At the last moment, Rick makes Ilsa
board the plane to Lisbon with her husband, telling her she would regret it if she stayed "Maybe not today,
maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life."
Strasser, tipped off by Renault, drives up alone. Rick kills him when he tries to intervene. When the police arrive,
Renault pauses, then tells them to "round up the usual suspects." Renault suggests to Rick that they join the Free
French in Brazzaville. As they walk away into the fog, Rick says, "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful
friendship."
Almost Femme Fatale: The main female character is not exactly a typical femme fatale, although she is completely
aware of her power over Rick, and could manipulate him into getting the transit visas, and tries in every way
possible to convince him to hand them over: she cries; she explains; she threatens. Her motives are pure, but she is,
nonetheless, nothing but trouble.
Plot: Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), who owns a nightclub in Casablanca, discovers his old flame Ilsa (Ingrid
Bergman) is in town with her husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). Laszlo is a famed rebel, and with Germans on
his tail, Ilsa knows Rick can help them get out of the country.
Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic drama anti-Nazi film directed by Michael Curtiz and based on Murray
Burnett and Joan Alison's unproduced stage play Everybody Comes to Rick's.

"Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By'."
"Round up the usual suspects."
"We'll always have Paris."
"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."
