QUESTION 1 20 MARKS,
(a) Concrete is the most widely used man-made construction material in the world, and is
ie and course aggregate,
second next to water, Concrete usually contain binder,
water and sometimes admixtures. Although all materials that go into a concrete
mixture are essential, cement is the most important constituent because it forms as the
delicate link in the concrete matrix. Diseuss any three (3) types of Portland cement
that are commonly used in conerete and their advantages, [10 Marks}
(b) Discuss the criteria of wood selection for building. [10 Marks}
QUESTION 2 [20 MARKS]
(a) Sieve analysis tests was performed on a sample of aggregate and produce results as
tabulated in Table 1. Caleulate the percent passing of the following aggregete,

QUESTION 3 [20 MARKS)
Calculate the mix proportion of 0.05 m? concrete trial mix for a superstructure using
DoE mix design method which requites a characteristic strength of 30MPa at 28days and
a slump of 10-30mm, margin, k= 1.96 The materials available are ordinary Portland
cement class 42.5, and uncrushed fine and coarse aggregates of specific gravity of 2.60.
‘The maximum nominal size of coarse aggregate is 20 mm (uncrushed single size 10 mm
and 20 mim; 1:2 by weight) and fine aggregate is 70% passing 600 wm sieve. Maximum
250 kg/m®. Use the provided
water cement ratio = 0.55, minimum cement content
attachment to design the conerete mix in Appendix 1. [20 marks}
QUESTION 4 [20 MARKS)
(a) There is a boom in the construction of high rise buildings, medium to long span
bridges, dams ete. all over the world from the last few decades, These constructions
lead to the utilization of large quantity of concrete which leads to increase in cement
production by 5.5% annually. The cement industry contributes about 5% to global
anthropogenic COz emissions. As a rule of thumb, for every ton of cement product,
aan equivalent amount of CO: will be released into the atmosphere. Explain four (4)
sustainable cement replacement materials that can be used in concrete construction to
reduce the COs emission due to the cement production, [15 marks]
(b) Illustrate the mechanism of workability enhancement using Superplasticizer.
[5 marks}

QUESTION 5 [20 MARKS]
(a) The corrosion resistance of steel is a basic property related to the easiness with which
this material reacts with a given environment. Explain why cast iron pipes are
widely used in drainage system compared to steel pipe. [10 marks]
(b) Explain five (5) areas of application of bituminous material in Civil Engineering
work. [10 marks}
