Editing

Components

Cutting an aspect of editing to allow us

to move from one shot to another
Examples:
Shot-reverse shot is when the camera moves back and forth between objects
and / or people (e.g. there are two people talking and the camera moves
between them to see what they are looking at and their facial emotion)
Eye line match is when the camera is pointed in the direction of where the
characters focus is (e.g. a man looking at a tree in a park)
Graphic match happens when the main character is on focus whilst the
backdrop blurs to a different scene

Visible and invisible editing refers to a

style of editing rather than a form
For example
Invisible editing is a way of moving from shot to shot without the knowledge
of the untrained eye (i.e. general public)
Visible editing is noticeable by the public as the scene are obvious (e.g. scene
blacks out at the end of a shot)

Editing the passage of time the passing

of time between two shots/scenes
For example:
Slow motion is the slowing down of an action of time (e.g. many scenes in the
Flash so that the audience knows that he is moving faster than everyone else
around him)
Ellipses refers to the blackout (e.g. someone getting on a plain may black out
then show him getting off the plain at the end of his journey)
Montage is usually used by the director when large periods of time passes
between scenes and uses different and other images to show the passing of
time (e.g. a couple growing old together over a long period of time)

Transition other than cuts looks at the

speed and style of the transition between
shots
For example:

o Dissolve is a technical aspect and involves the image changing the pixel size
whilst transitioning into the next shot
o Fade out is usually used to fade into darkness and is used to signify the end of
a scene (e.g. fading out is sometimes used on the last scenes to introduce the
credits)
o Wipe is when a scene is wiped across a shot to make it look as if the last
scene has been forced out
