List and describe the approximate steps AND TIMES of their commute here:

Departs home (28 William Carson Cres.) at 10:30am

Turn down Yonge St.
Take Allen Road North.
Then take Dufferin St.
Turn left on Gerry Fitzgerald.

Criteria

Ways their commute is

positive for this criteria

Ways their commute is

negative or problematic

Safety (9)

Volvo XC-90 is fully tested and

equipped with proper safety
measures such as air bags, seat
belts Storage for belongs.

Approximately 12000 car

accidents happen in Toronto
every year.

Health (8)

Listening to the radio while

driving. Music has proven to be a
coping mechanism for many,
allowing them to feel unstressed
and feel happy.

A car does not provide

exercise or physical fitness.

Environmental
(7)

There is nothing positive.

An SUV uses a lot of gas.

The Volvo XC-90 uses
gasoline as fuel which is not
environmentally friendly.

Convenience
(6)

Route is simplistic, only having to

turn onto Yonge St. then onto Gerry
Fitzgerald a while later.

Traffic can be unpredictable.

Reliability (5)

There are optional routes if current

one is blocked for an unexpected
reason. Possible routes: Yonge and
Sheppard, Yonge and Finch.

There is nothing negative.

Commute Option B: TTC/Subway

Paste a screenshot of their commute (from Google Maps) here:

List and describe the approximate steps AND TIMES of their commute here:

Depart at: 10:20 am

Turn left onto Yonge St. off of William Carson Cres.
Walk South to York Mills Station. (Two blocks)
Travel Northbound on York Mills Subway. (3 stops)
Switch onto a bus at Finch Station (20 stops)
Walk from Steeles Avenue West to Gerry Fitzgerald.
Arrives at approximately 11:10am

Criteria

Ways their
commute is
positive for this
criteria

Ways their commute is negative

or problematic

Safety (9)

Handlebars and seats

are provided for
passengers.

Due to amount of passengers safe

equipment may not be
available. Running can cause personal
injuries along with other
citizens. belongings could be stolen. A
woman once fell asleep on a subway
and sleep walked onto the tracks.

Health (8)

You can relax and listen

to music while on the
TTC. Walking to and
from the stations is
possible and provides
exercise.

There is nothing negative.

Environmental
(7)

TTC subways are

electrical. The TTC
buses are hybrid, which
uses no gas.

Where does the electricity to run the TTc

subway come from?

Convenience
(6)

Subway station is two

blocks away from home.

Changing from the TTC subway to the

Finch bus station is necessary. There
are 20 stops on the Finch bus ride
before Steeles Avenue.

Reliability (5)

Subways come every 25 minutes.

Buses can be delayed due to

traffic. Subways have a maximum
amount of people allowed on the
subway.

Commute Option C: Carpool

Criteria

Ways their commute is positive

for this criteria

Ways their commute

is negative or
problematic

Safety (9)

All cars have standard safety features

such as airbags seat belts and... storage
for your belongings

Drivers always risk the

chance of getting into a
car accident. Even if the
given driver is careful,
other drivers on the road
could be negligent

Health (8)

Can be less stressful for the person who

does not have to drive

It can be stressful for the

person who has to drive.

Environment
(7)

If you carpool, you are effectively

reducing the amount of time cars are on
the road because instead of two people
driving for 3 minutes, it is only one
person driving for 3 minutes. Even a
slight adjustment has positive
outcomes. For example, it is a fact that
if Canadian motorists avoided idling for
3 minutes each day of the year, carbon
emissions could be reduced by 1.4
million tonnes!

Cars release a range of

gases into the
atmosphere including
carbon dioxide which is
the main greenhouse gas
that causes climate
change.

Convenience
(6)

Convenient for the person who does not

have to drive that day

Not convenient if one

person is running late or
forgets something
In addition, it is not
convenient if the route
becomes more
complicated because of

pick-ups and drop-offs

Reliability (5)

If two drivers are sharing the driving,

than it could be more reliable if one
person is unable to drive for whatever
reason

Unreliable if the
designated driver is sick
or cant make it that day
or if traffic holds them
back

Calculating the Pros and Cons

How it works:
Looking at the charts above with the list of pros and cons for each
commute I was able to assess each pro and con on a scale of 1 3.
AN EXAMPLE:

Criteria
Ranked

Pros

Cons

Cost
(Ranked 7)

- It doesnt cost very

much to use the TTC
and you can get tax
breaks.

- Even though the cost

seems really low it
adds up

Environment
(Ranked 8)

- Riding the TTC is

much better for the
env. There are fewer
carbon emissions.

- Busses still use gas in

result the bus still
puts carbon emissions
into the earth

Then, I multiplied the ranked criteria by the ranked pros

and cons to see which one outweighs the other, the pros or
the cons.
TTC pro COST: 7 x 3 = 21
TTC pro Env.: 8 x 3 = 24
TTC pro total = 45

TTC con cost: 7 x 1 = 7

TTC con Env: 8 x 0 = 0
TTC con total = 7
