Standard
With this lesson, students will meet the
Nebraska Standards for language arts when it
comes to second graders. Students will
enhance their creativity and knowledge by
creating a storybird to show they understand
what adjectives are and how to use and apply
them. Students will be engaged in pre- writing
activities by working with peers and their
teacher to fully understand adjectives are.
Students will work in teams of three to
collaborate and create a rough draft to
enhance their writing techniques and skills.
The students will also have to gather and use
relevant adjectives and then apply them to
their StoryBird. The students will enhance
their collaborative skills further by reviewing
and providing feedback to other groups on
their projects, which will teach them to
provide oral and written feedback to other
classmates. The students will take this
feedback to revise and improve their own
writing. The last standard the students will
meet is showing their ability to take the
feedback given by their peers and apply it by
proofreading and editing their writing before
publishing their books.
Introduction

Students will be taught the basic uses and

types of adjectives. They will do a series of

worksheets and then be asked to create a 5
page Storybird book using a variety of
pictures and adjectives to show what they
have learned.
Technology Uses/Materials

This lesson will require the use of computers

in order for the students to go to
storybird.com and create their book. Each
small group of students will need access to
one computer or laptop.

Objectives

Objective 1: Learn what adjectives are and

how to identify them.
Objective 2: Be able to use adjectives in a
sentence.
Objective 3: Be able to use a computer to
access storybird.com and create a book.

Preparing the Student

This lesson is preparing the student to

understand and use adjectives in their future
writing, as well as teaching them how to
create a book on storybird.com.

Assessment of Student Learning

Remembering: Teach the students what an

adjective is and the purpose of adjectives.
Give examples of adjectives so they can see
what they look like.
Comprehension: Ask students to give
examples of adjectives. Try and feel out the
class and see what their level of
understanding on adjectives.
Apply: Show them a sentence and see if they
can identify the adjective. See if they are able
to use the information to do so.
Analyze: Have students describe the
difference between adjectives and other
working parts of a sentence to show that they
can categorize adjectives correctly.
Evaluate: Have the students fill out a
worksheet on adjectives in order to see if they
are able to work with adjectives completely on
their own.

Create: Create the Storybird. Using all the

knowledge they have acquired they will select
5 pictures and describe each picture with 3
different sentences with 3 different adjectives
in each sentence.

Measurement of Success

Explain what an adjective is to the

class (definition, placement in a
sentence).
Ask the students for examples of
adjectives.
Present a sentence to the class and
have the students identify the
adjective.
Have the students explain the
difference between an adjective and
the other working parts of a sentence
(e.g. verb, noun).
Students will complete a worksheet
individually in order to evaluate their
understanding of adjectives.
Explain to the students that they will
be creating a five page story on
Storybird using their knowledge of
adjectives.
Split the students into groups of three
Show the Storybird you created to the
class as an example.
Give each group of three to a
computer to work on.
Have one member of the group log in
and/or create a student account.
Students will begin working on their
five page story by taking pictures
from Storybird and develop three
sentences about the picture they have
chosen using adjectives.
Complete a cover page for your story
and title it My Adjective Book.
Assign each small group two other
stories to edit and give feedback on.
Have small groups exchange
feedback.
Small groups will make changes to
their stories based on feedback.
Save and publish your story on
Storybird.

Success in this project will be measured on

how well the students are able to manage

their class time to complete the project, how
well they can work with the members of their
groups, their ability to provide feedback, their
ability to revise their stories after being given
feedback, and their overall knowledge of
adjectives. Metacognition will be applied
because the students will have to think about
the adjectives and fully understand what they
are before they can apply them to their
StoryBird books. The students must
understand this because a majority of their
grade will come from their ability to use
adjectives successfully to describe the
pictures in their books. This lesson can be
applied to future lessons because anytime in
their future (in and out of school) students will
have to be able to use adjectives to describe
the world around them. This will specifically
be important to the students when they start
taking statewide writing assessments starting
in fourth grade and continuing until they are in
high school. There are a number of ways that
we as teachers could expand on this lesson.
