Scha 1 Vietor Saha Professor Raymond UWRT 1103-03 15 October 2014 ‘The Saha Tree ‘My name can say much, yet little about my heritage. For reasons I do not know, my first ‘name has no relation to India, and seems to be some form of an American name, However, my last nameis Saha, a name that nearly all of my relatives have. The Saha name was originally the name for the business class people in India’s caste system, meaning merchant (Ancestry). Obviously in present day though, it means nothing more than just a name. ‘Through my research and conversations with my family, I have come to learn many things about my family, One of which I found to be quite interesting is that up until my great grandparents, all of my ancestors have been named Saha, | also realized how simplistic our zames became as generations went on. For example, my great grandfather is Nabadwip Saha, my grandfather Sunil Saha, my father is Ranabir Saha, and Iam Victor Saha. Another strange thing is that my father and his brother’s names all rhyme: Subir, Prabir, and Ranabir. As well as this, my mother and her sister’s name thyme: Rinku and Tinku. Although we are Bengali by tongue, my family has always lived in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, not Bangladesh nab, Ranabit, Tink), West Bengal, as opposed to Bangladesh, consists mainly of Hindu Bengalis Saha2 rather than Muslim Bengalis. It is on the eastern end of India, right next to Bangladesh, hence the name West Bengal Kolkata is to this day considered the poorest city of India, The streets are occupied by humans, dogs, cats, and cows alike. More than 75% of the population of Kolkata is considered to be below the poverty line, where over 40% of the 75% have been living in slums for overtwo ‘generations (Kundu). The ziris very impure from all the pollution from vehicles and waste from animals and humans. The house that my mother’s side of the family lives in has existed since the 1800s, when my great grandparents had lived there (Tinku). It is completely made of concrete and is a single color. My father’s entire extended family also lives in Kolkata, just about a five ‘minute walk from my mother’s home. Their home, although faisly bigger, was made of the same material, but was also.a yam factory (Prabir and Ranabir). Of my relatives whom live in India still, only a few truly run a “business”. My mother's brother, Sanjoy Saha, owns a medical pharmacy shop which once was extremely successful, but eventually lost its business once a larger medical retail store was opened up, Two years ago there ‘was a large debate of whether he and his family would move to America and livein our house or not. Although it was nearly certain in the end because they almost created no income in India, ‘my mother’s brother ended up refusing to come to Ametica because of his love for India. On my father’s side, we still run a yarn company and generate a large sum of income. Saha 3 I call myself half cousin’s with all my cousins who live in America except one because we have one thing different in our family than most. My mother’s sister, Rinku, and my father’s brother, Prabir, decided to get married, therefore, making my father marry his sister in law, and vice versa. Because of this, we all have many things in common in our genetics, such as the same bad vision, skin color, eyes, nose, teeth, lips, ete. Another thing strange is how close in age we all are, where one was born in 1986 (Pamela Saha), and the other three (including my sister and me) were bom in 1962 (Pooja Saha), 1994 (Piyanka Saha), and 1996 (Victor Saha). The first person of my family 10 come to America was my uncle, Prabir Saha. He came to forge the path for the rest of my family to follow. He traveled all across the United States trying, to find the ideal location to live. California was too expensive, Arizona was too hot, New York ‘was too crowded, Michigan was too cold, and so on. The only place that was perfect was Apex, North Carolina, which was once the ninth best place to live in America. My uncle did his, ‘traveling all throughout the early 1980s and brought the rest of my family slowly over the course cof a few years in the later 1980s. Ever since thea, my family, and my cousins’ families have all lived in the Cary or Apex area. Now, although Apex is not the ninth best place to live, Cary has made the list for being the 19" best place to live in America as of 2014 (Bluest« la ally, The reason my relatives decided to move from India was to give the next generation, also known as my cousins, sister, and myself, « better life with less pollution and casierincome compared to Kolkala, Saha 4 As per getting citizenship, it obviously took a few years to get but was given to my relatives fairly quickly with fairly no problem, The only relative who received his citizenship from a different way from registration is my eldest cousin who lives in America, Sudeep Saha His family was the last to come to America, and he arrived when he was in his mid-teens. He took JROTC during school because he simply vould not understand English that well during the time and needed some way to get a job. After graduating high school and going to Wake Technical Community College for a few years, my cousin joined the United States Army for four years and was deployed to Afghanistan during the war, Because of his service, he was given ‘American citizenship. One thing still not truly upheld in America is my family name, My uncle told my cousins, sister, and mysel? a few times that we must bring back the meaning in our name and start some form of a business. Although this has never happened and is not likely to happen because of all of our career goals/choices, my family has been quite successful in America, unlike what would have been in India.
