History Portfolio Reflection
In order to be able to teach history-social science one needs to be able to compare and
contrast past and current events. This strategy is required in order to maximize student learning.
With this knowledge students will be able to see how past events effect the present. Also, one
should be able to determine fact from opinion. This is especially important when one is referring
to primary and secondary sources. One should be able to distinguish from these two sources in
order to explain to ones students the validity of the information. Lastly, one should know
general information on the structure of the American government and major historical events that
have occurred in California. Knowing important details on the government and on the history of
California are essential for students to learn at a young age. If they are given this knowledge they
will be able to establish a foundation and later build from it.
I have taken variety of different history courses and each class has been very beneficial.
Yet, two courses that I have taken have been the most impactful. These two courses focused on
the history of America and on the history of California. Through these two classes I have come
to learn the great events and people that have formed the United States and the state of
California. With these events and people this nation and state would not be what it is today. For
example, for an assignment I needed to watch a documentary and complete a worksheet based on
CAs early transportation. This documentary showed the trains used in Compton, Long Beach,
and San Pedro in the early 1950s. With this short video I was able to see how impactful trains
were to these neighborhoods. And also see how, over time, these cities have been able to

transition to other modes of transportation. In the end, history-social science is a very enjoyable
subject and I hope to one day also share this enjoyment with my students.
