Item Description Scene
It has been two months into the school year and John was struggling in his
English 114A class. He became quite overwhelmed from his heavy workload. He had a
big essay to write and the stress was affecting his focus. He decided to go to the Oviatt
Library at CSUN to get some peace and quiet.
He went to library and could not find a room since the library was booked. So,
John had to do his work in an open space, around other students. It became a bit too noisy

for John; there was a loud group of guys talking about how cool the boxing match was.
John was unable to fully focus, until people began to leave, which gave him a stray of
hope. He finally had the silence he needed to begin working on his essay.
An hour into writing his essay and John had gained a headache. He then shouted,
Damn, I have so much work to do and so little time! along mumbling, I am hopeless.
He had no idea that a library worker was listening to him. The worker approached him
and said, Hey buddy, I heard what you were shouting. I understand what you are going
through. We have all been though this at some point. I am here for you to help you if you
need it. Johns mood brightened and he replied, Thank you so much sir, I appreciate it.
I have so much work so little time. This stress is not letting me focus on my essay. The
worker quickly answered, Here, take this. He handed John a small object, maybe about
the size of a baseball. The object was semi-spherical with an attached circular part on the
side, which could be used as a handle. This object was made of foam which gave it a
texture that allows John to manipulate it, by squeezing onto it. The object was all-white
with a tan brown color on the inside of the larger surface area of the semi-sphere. The
object was a foamed replica of another object. It was flat underneath the object, which
allowed it to be set down on a surface.
John grabbed it and said, No mean to disrespect but what the hell am I going to
do with this? The worker said, Any time you get stressed out, you can use this to calm
yourself down. Try squeezing it a few times when you are stressing out and it will work
like magic. The object had small writing on the sides of it, in purple, which said, Be
you. John asked the worker, What does this mean? He answered, No matter what you
do in life, always be you. Some days, you will be stressed and some days you will not.

You have the potential to write a good essay, so write a great essay that will earn you an
A. John was amazed by those two words.
John took the workers advice when he was writing his essay. Everything was
coming to place and seemed right. Every time he got stressed, he grabbed the object and
squeezed it. Somehow, when he squeezed the object, he got a sudden boost of energy and
relaxation. It was as if he had a lot of caffeine in his system. Now that John knows how to
keep his stress level to a minimum, he is able to do better in his English class.
