August 28, 2014 In-Class Activity Case Study Mrs. Smith, an elderly woman, volunteered to participate in a program that matches senior citizens with young children who have special needs. As part of the program, Mrs. Smith was matched up with David, a 4 year old child with emotional and behavior disabilities. David lived with his mother, a recovering drug addict who was struggling to raise David. Mrs. Smith usually spent 5 hours a week with David at his house or in community locations such as the park. On occasion they would go to a movie, play miniature golf, or have lunch at a local fast food restaurant. One evening Mrs. Smith was eating at a restaurant with some friends and began talking about David. Sitting in the next booth was Ms. Sanchez a teacher at the nonpublic school where David attended preschool. Ms. Sanchez overheard Mrs. Smith discuss David’s behavior, including one instance when David grabbed a butcher knife and ran after his mother. Mrs. Smith made disparaging comments about David’s mother and her past drug addiction, and expressed her opinion that David should be removed from his mother’s home because she was not a suitable parent. Ms. Sanchez recognized the child that Mrs. Smith was talking about and felt very uncomfortable listening to her divulge information about David and his family. You are Ms. Sanchez.
