Family Studies 40S


This course is designed to help students understand human behaviour, to foster healthy attitudes, and
to explore the dynamics of the family unit. Many people re-examine their decisions about family
throughout the course of their lives, continually reassessing and re-evaluating their relationships. Topics
covered focus on: the changing family, the roles of the family in raising children, building healthy
relationships and strong marriages, self-esteem, self-management and media literacy.
Module 1: Family Relationships

Examine and analyze the importance of developing effective family relationships in society

Module 2: Human Development

Investigate various theories of development in order to apply appropriate nurturing techniques


that enhance human development

Module 3: Caregiving Through the Life Cycle

Distinguish among present and future factors that will affect the needs and wants of individuals
and families

Module 4: Individual Relationships and Communication

Explore and apply communication, decisionmaking and conflict resolution skills to various
situations and relationships

Module 5: Personal Decisions and Community Connections

Examine various characteristics of personal development that enable a healthy adult lifestyle
that contributes to the community and society

Module 6: Diversity in Society

Identify and discuss cultures and lifestyles in various situations
