Introduction to Generalist Nursing Practice

Ferris State University School of Nursing provides an excellent clinical rotation set-up with
exposure to numerous nursing departments caring for the needs of diverse populations across the lifespan.
I have cared for patients and families of all ages and background in the NICU, PICU, Pediatrics,
Geriatrics, Critical Care, Emergency, Neurology, Cardiology, Gastrointestinal, Medical Surgical, Public
and Community Health settings.
The best example of caring for a diverse population in one setting is public and community health.
At the health department in Manistee, Michigan I was able to provide education to families in the WIC
program, assess and educate young women about birth control and their sexual health, vaccinate children,
visit family homes to assess the development of infants, and provide nutrition information to people of all
ages.
My rotation with Hospice of Michigan was an individualized experience where I learned a
different set of skills: communication, comfort, and palliative care. My perception of myself has always
been that sometimes I struggle when it comes to interpersonal communication. Through Hospice, I was
able to find my voice and communicate with patients that needed encouragement and a listening ear. It
gave me a sense of purpose and value to be able to do everything in my power to allow a terminally ill
patient comfort, pain relief, and dignity.
In the neonatal intensive care unit, I cared for a premature baby that was suffering from heroin
withdrawal. The mother of the baby would come in and out periodically without telling the nurses and it
was very apparent the baby was suffering. She had a temperature, she was agitated, and would constantly
shake. Through caring for her, I was able to determine the one thing that comforted her and that was being
held. Fortunately the nurse I was working with allowed me to spend time holding the baby to calm her
down and make her feel more relaxed. I value every single patient that I have cared for, they all teach and
inspire me, and I cant wait to continue on my nursing journey and make an impact in their lives as well.
