Cholera

Definition of Cholera
Cholera is a bacterial disease that causes severe
diarrhea and dehydration.
It can lead to death if not treated soon.
The disease has known to cause pandemics in history.
The latest endemic being the one in Haiti after the
2010 earthquake.

Causes
Vibrio cholerae is the bacterium that causes chlolera.
When a person consumes the contaminated food or
water, the bacteria release a toxin in the intestines
that produces severe diarrhea.

Symtoms

irritability
Lethargy
sunken eyes
a dry mouth
extreme thirst
dry and shriveled skin

Transmission
Drinking or washing food or utensils in water
contaminated by faeces pf a person infected with
cholera
Raw shellfish especially raw oysters

Treatment
Oral rehydration therapy
Antibiotics such as tetracycline and chloramphenicol

Prevention

Drink and use safe water


Wash your hands often with soap and safe water
Use latrines or bury your feces (poop)
Cook food well (especially seafood), keep it covered,
eat it hot, and peel fruits and vegetables
Clean up safelyin the kitchen and in places where
the family bathes and washes clothes
