6-32 screws will generally be used to screw receptacles and switches into plastic boxes and steel mud rings, they are also used to attach cover plates to miscellaneous devices (receptacles and switches). 8-32 screws will commonly be used in steel electrical boxes (4" square and larger) 10-32 screws will commonly be found in light fixtures and most ground screws have 10-32 threads 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 are more bolts than screws....they will generally be used to bolt equipment to walls, floors, etc... The first number is the screws diameter, the second number represents the number of threads per inch. These screws and bolts can be bought in a multitude of lengths and the smaller ones (6-32 through 10-32) are easily cut to length using a screw cutter. ---o0o--The screw that holds the device on is a 6-32, usually about 1 inch. On steel boxes, the screw that holds the cover or plaster ring on is an 8-32, fairly short. Ground screws are usually 10-32 Trim plate screws are 6-32 but they are painted to match the plates.
