FedEx and ERP

Introduction:
The company which we choose for our Computer Applications for Business 1 is
FedEx. Reason behind it was that, it is a Multinational Corporation, doing business overall the
globe. And it has implemented the ERP (Read: Enterprise Recourse Planning) in the mid-90s
FedEx Corporation originally known as FDX Corporation is a logistics services company,
based in the United States with headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee. The name "FedEx" is a
syllabic abbreviation of the name of the company's original air division, Federal Express, which
was used from 1973 until 2000
Enterprise Recourse Planning (ERP) system is an integrated computer-based application used
to manage internal and external resources. Its main purpose is to regulate the flow of information
between all the business functions inside the organization and manage a stable connection with
the outside stakeholders. ERP is built on a centralized database and normally utilizing a common
computing platform, ERP systems consolidate all business operations into a uniform and
enterprise-wide system environment. ERP is an amalgamation of three most important
components; Business Management Practices, Information Technology and Specific
Business Objectives.

FedEx: The start.

As FedEx is a logistic service company, it thinks highly about its costumers (individual
and businesses) and wishes to give them the maximum satisfaction through their services. FedEx
provides its worldwide costumers with a wide portfolio of transportation, e-commerce and
business services. Before implementing the ERP system, it was extremely hard as well as timely
and costly, as they had to track the documents ( or anything) through keeping in touch with
FAX, telephone calls, etc. but since the implementation of ERP system , all this was done in an
easier way, and their services were improved at an extreme length.
Federal Express realized early on that for a speed-hungry world, information about
package delivery was as important as the delivery itself. So, it pioneered the use of bar-code
technology, put computers in delivery vans and shared its software with customers. In doing so,
the company turned package tracking into a high art and gave new meaning to the term
"customer service" by empowering customers to serve themselves. Giving customers access to
FedEx information systems raised performance and lowered costs on both sides.

How FedEx introduced erp (sap)

Federal Express sees its biggest e-commerce opportunity in linking its shipping software
to corporate enterprise resource planning [ERP] systems, rather than in delivering documents
electronically. FedEx announced an upgrade to its Web site which lets customers themselves
arrange to ship packages online in 58 nations instead of just shipping within the United States.
FedEx has enabled online tracking for some time. The site lets customers conduct business in
four different languages, which mainly include Japanese, Spanish, French, or English.
FedEx has now imposed technology with its logistics and services which has given them
an upper hand in the competitive market. FedEx has announced agreements with ERP giant SAP
and e-commerce vendor Interworld to build links to its online tracking site into their software.
As a part of this alliance, FedEx is delivering a new shipping and tracking application designed
specifically to provide R/3 users with real time package lifecycle information. SAP has worked
closely with FedEx to develop a certified interface providing SAP and FedEx customer with a
fully integrated supply chain solution.
The company hopes that through both its Web site and proprietary PC software for customers, it
will be able to move all order-taking and tracking online, reducing the company's costs.
FedEx still delivers a lot of documents, however, and has been slow to move into electronic
delivery, as compared to its competitor (UPS) , but once it started it didnt take them much long
to get back in the race.

FedEx tracking system:

FedEx implemented its tracking service with which the costumers can locate the position
of their document at their own convenience. This is done by logging onto the website and
entering the code ( which is actually the receipt number given to the costumer), through which
they can easily locate their document, etc that from where have they left, at what location they
are, and at what time it reaches to the end person. With FedEx Tracking, the costumers have
maximum visibility into their shipments status. They can customize their tracking results page,
organize their shipments in the way they want, easily send and receive e-mail notifications, and
even save time with the streamlined Signature Proof of Delivery request process. FedEx
Tracking can remember the tracking numbers youve entered, so its even easier and faster to
look them up.

How does it help the costumers:

FedEx has set up their Web site so that the costumers can have a fast and easy access to
the tracking information of all of their packages that they have sent with FedEx.

With FedEx, they can track in a variety of ways-by using their tracking number, by using their
account number and reference numbers online at the FedEx Web site or by using your personal email address. FedEx also offers Insight, which can track all of the packages and shipments
without a reference number or tracking number. This service is available to members of FedEx.
What the costumers have to do is that they need to have a FedEx account, a computer with
internet access, or give an email account (if they are willing to use email features). Once they
have done this, they are supposed to follow these steps.
Locate your tracking or reference number from your package airbill.
Navigate to the FedEx Web site.
Click on "Tracking," then "Track by Tracking Number" or "Track by Reference."
Enter the tracking number or reference number in the space provided. They can enter up
to 30 tracking or reference numbers at one time.
Click on "Track" to view the tracking information about their package.
Track using your personal e-mail address by addressing an e-mail to track@fedex.com.
Enter your tracking numbers, with no dashes or spaces in the body of the e-mail. Enter
one tracking number per line, with a maximum of 30 tracking numbers. Your numbers
should be the air bill number, followed by the country code and then the date of
shipment, for example: 123456789 us 021706. You will receive an e-mail back right
away with the tracking information.

An ease for the costumers

Through the website and the resources that are now provided to the costumer its quite easier to
know about their parcels and their positions. The costumers can now
Quickly determine their shipment status.
With the color-coded status bar, they can quickly and easily identify the status of their shipment.
The status bar visually shows the costumers about the status of their shipment, whether it is
picked up, on schedule, or delivered, for greater peace of mind and the satisfaction that is
needed. They can also stay in the knowledge with a clear estimated date of delivery

more important to them. With FedEx Tracking they can customize the time zone and time
format, as well as the order of events, as per their demand
Easily choose to send and receive e-mail notifications.
If the costumers are willing to use the email features than they can select to receive e-mail
notifications in up to 26 languages and rest assured that they will be provided with the most upto-date shipment information. The costumers have a choice to select whether theyd like to
receive e-mail notifications when there are exceptions, when shipments are delivered, or for
current detailed results or about the over all process.
Take advantage of their time-saving features.
When the costumer return to FedEx Tracking , the web will even remember their recently entered
tracking numbers.
