PROBLEM 1
Determine the maximum horizontal force P required
to maintain the 100 pentagonal block in
equilibrium if the coefficient of static friction at ALL
surfaces of contact is = 0.25. Neglect the mass of
the wedge.

Answer: Pmax = 842.1511 N

PROBLEM 2
Determine the minimum force P for the system to be in equilibrium. Block A weighs 275 lbs. Neglect the
weight of member D. The coefficients of friction are AB = 0.3, CD = 0, DE = 0.2, F = 0.25.

Answer: Pmin = 156.9425 lbs

PROBLEM 3
What is the least value of weight M that can be
suspended at the left side of bar ABCD if the bar is
to remain horizontal? The coefficient of friction
between the cord and the drum D is 0.15. The
surface of the wall is smooth.

Answer: WM = 40.82 kips

PROBLEM 4
Determine the maximum mass of Body B for
which the system will be in equilibrium if the
mass of block A is 20 kg. The coefficient of
friction is 0.40 at all surfaces in contact. State the
direction of impending motion.
Answers:
WB = 2525.3725 N max. mass where the
Body B will not slip
WB = 2272.8352 N max. mass where the
Body B will not tip
Since, WB tipping < WB slipping:
Direction of impending motion: The Body B will tip to the left before it slips.

PROBLEM 5
A 150-N weight is suspended at a pulley system given
below. Determine the torque at pulley B. Also, determine
the reactions at fixed support D. The coefficient of friction
at all surfaces of contact is 0.35.

Answers:
Torque at pulley B:
MB = 85.7767 Nm
Reactions at D:
Dy = 55.0578 N
Dx = 78.2596 N
MD = 741.7853 Nm
