Meredith finishes up grading her AP
classes essays while students put their SSR book away: Go ahead and find a stopping point. Put your books away once youve done so. Meredith starts to read and label a practice college essay with the students. Notice the spelling the author uses up here, ERX. He spells it this way so the readers pronounce it with the same lisp hes writing about. Meredith keeps the lesson lighthearted and not too serious so the lesson doesnt become boring. Meredith gives students time to work in their groups while she walks around. Meredith asks the students questions as well as answers their questions as she visits each group. Where is the thesis in this essay? Where is the topic sentence for this paragraph? Can the thesis be found in the conclusion?
Students took their SSR time seriously and
read their books. They are quietly putting books away while Meredith gets the lesson ready.
Are all the classes this respectful of SSR
time? Are there reading checks for these students?
Students are following along and take
notes on their handouts. Students seem very engaged and are answering questions Meredith asks.
I like how Meredith jokes around with the
students. The kids seem engaged.
Students seem to enjoy group work. They
stay on task for the most part. Looks like students respond well to Merediths humor and easygoing demeanor. Students actually want to show Meredith that theyre getting work done.
How often does she incorporate group
work in her class? Do all students respond well to group work?
