Question 1:
A curve of polynomial of 2nd order (y=ax2+bx+c) is as shown in figure below. Using the three
ordinates y0, y1 and y2, derive the expression to find the area between y0 and y1 which can be
represented by:
h
(5 y 0 + 8 y1 y 2 ) where h is the common interval between the ordinates. Complete
12
derivation is to be shown.
Area:
y0
y1
y2
Question 2:
Refer to the figure below:
y=kx2
a
Derive an expression to find the area under the curve bounded within x=a and y=b where the
expression of the curve is shown where k is a constant. Determine the centroid location and
moment of inertia about an axis passing through the centroid parallel to x-axis.
Question 3:
The fully loaded water plane of a super tanker has the following half ordinates spaced 25 m
apart: 0, 7.75, 14.12, 21.36, 24.29, 25.22, 20.15, 14.67, 5.28 and 3.19 m respectively. Calculate
the water plane area and water-plane coefficient, centroid from Stn 0 and moment of inertia
about stn 0.
Answer: AW= 6753.75 m2 and CW =0.595, centroid = 111.827 m, MI about centroid
