One way to use them: as an inline background image BEFORE h-link text; e.g. to a
n Al Jazeera article:
<a style="background: url('http://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=english.alja
zeera.net') 0px 0px no-repeat; padding-left:19px;" href="http://english.aljazeer
a.net/news/americas/2010/02/201022423250919279.html">US transfers Guantanamo det
ainees</a>
.......................
.......................
A second way to use them is to place the .png AFTER h-link text; e.g.:
The image <em>America del Sur</em> print is by the Uruguayan artist <a href="htt
p://www.google.com/search?q=Joaquin%20Torres%20Garcia" title="Google search resu
lts">Joaquin Torres Garcia (<img src="_files/goog11x11.png" width="11" border="0
" alt="Google search results" title="Google search results" style="vertical-alig
n:middle;" /></a>)
.......................
*NOTE*: these pngs can be saved in the folder for a web page and called from the
re -- instead of hot-linking to them.

========================
I got the idea for calling favicons & using them as png images from viewing the
source of one of Reprieve.org's pages (http:/www.reprive.org.uk). They were usi
ng the .pngs in their ordered lists, viz.:
<ol>
<li><a style="background: ... ">This is the hyperlink text</a></li>
