SOLs: 2.1 d, 2.3 a Essential Questions: How does effective observations help scientist create meaning? Materials/ Technology: Whiteboard Per Student: Graphic organizer: Think like a scientist Group: Differentiation: Read text to students as needed, Have student to share ideas and write words to have child copy. Strategy: Think, Pair, Share Procedure: (Complete, Correct, Discuss) Engage: Ask the students: What is a scientist? Tell the students they will be asked to think and act as scientist Explore: (Motivator, Connector, Relevancy): Provide the students with a variety of objects and pictures representing the three states of matter. Allow approx 10 minutes for students to explore the items in small groups. After about 5 minutes have the student group the objects using any criteria they can think of. After the open explorations have the students list some of the questions they have as a result of their exploration. Have each group share their observations, groupings, and questions with the whole group. Explain/Direct Instruction: Pass out the materials to each group and have the students begin to sort the items into different categories. Extend: Have the students to begin categorizing the items into solids, liquids, and gases Evaluate: I will evaluate the students by listening in on them while they are discussing in their groups. Closure: I closed the assignment by recapping what we just learned and ask for any questions Homework: n/a Assessment (Informal): Exit ticket Assessment (Formal): Formal assessment will be done to test their knowledge Teacher Reflection: The lesson went well, I would make sure that in the future that I model the activity with the students for the next lesson to ensure their understanding.
