Specific Purpose: At the end of my speech, I want my audience to be able to understand the
hardships of Kentucky coal mining and begin to think of where it went wrong.

I. Attention Getter: Many of you may have thought Hunger Games is a fiction movie, however it
has many connections to modern day Kentucky.
II. Thesis: Hunger Games the movie has relevance to Kentucky coal mining.
III. Relevance to Audience/Reason audience should listen: They go to school in Kentucky, and
the Kentucky coal mining has a global economic impact.
IV. Speaker Credibility: Hours of research for this assignment
V. Preview (Main Ideas/Points): Kentucky coal mining is a struggling culture as portrayed in the
movie the Hunger Games. Education levels are low, and large corporations (government in the
Hunger Games) keep control of the land and its people.

I. Main Point #1: Education/working at young age
A. Supporting Material: Many fathers are dying in the mines, forcing children to go work
to sustain a lifestyle.
B. Supporting Material: Education levels are among the lowest in the country in coal
mining parts of Kentucky.

II. Main Point #2: Scrip
A. Supporting Material: Companies kept their workers suppressed in the 1930s by
making them live in coal mining towns and only paying them in coal scrip that could only be
used at the company store.

B. Supporting Material: In the Hunger Games, District 12 is suppressed by the
government, and the people of the region must mine so the rich can keep their extravagant
lifestyle.
Transition: Coal mining destroys land.
III. Main Point #3: Destruction of land
A. Supporting Material: Mountain top removal has taken off hills in eastern Kentucky
and destroyed forests home to wildlife.
B. Supporting Material: The people of District 12 in the Hunger Games live in filth and
scorched earth.
Transition: As you can see, there are many similarities between coal mining and the Hunger
Games.
Conclusion

I. Restatement of Thesis/Summary: Hunger Games the movie has relevance to Kentucky coal
mining and isnt just entirely for entertainment.
II. Creative Closing Thought or Memorable Conclusion: Hunger Games was a fictional movie,
but it had many purposeful correlations between culture in Kentucky today.
