Letter of Intent

I am writing to state my intentions prior to and why I am an amazing addition to the

Visual Arts Education Program. I have always found joy in creating art and becoming an art
teacher has been my motivation these last few years in college. While working towards this goal
I have enrolled in a large array of classes to improve my formal skills, learn more about art
history, and broaden my artistic range. I am excited to earn my B.F.A in the Visual Arts
Program, step into a classroom for my student teaching, and eventually conduct my own
course. Once I graduate I plan to teach at the secondary level in middle and high school.
One reason that I desire to become an art teacher is because I feel that art plays an
important role in exposing students to different cultures. Through out my schooling experience I
have rarely learned about other cultures, including my own, in the classroom, and I learned
even less about non-european art. I will as an art teacher make sure my students are aware that
there is an array of artworks and history in the world. I will strive to include multicultural learning
activities and projects in my classroom as often as possible.
Another reason I wish to become an art teacher is because I feel it plays a role in
helping students build self-esteem and awareness of their own artistic capabilities. When I was
in third grade my elementary school hired our first art instructor. I had always enjoyed making
art, but her class helped to build my self confidence and exposed me to different mediums. I
wasnt fortunate enough to have an art teacher through middle and high school but I will bring
that experience to my students. My classroom will be a place that students can be true to
themselves and create work they never imagined they could.
I will be an excellent teacher in a middle and high school setting because I am capable
of communicating with children and young adults successfully. No matter what level I teach I will
make sure to draw from my students prior knowledge and inspire them to be creative. I will
create a comfortable, welcoming environment for all of my students.
