To whom it may concern:

The Salem State University Sociology Department is an underappreciated asset to

the Salem community and to the university. Students who choose a sociology major
or minor are actively engaged in community service through its prominent service
learning courses. This is directly in line with the Salem State mission statement
focusing on civic engagement.
Our sociology departments goal is to help students delve deeper into their
awareness of social cultures locally and around the world. As they learn about these
exciting cultures and themselves, students are able to take their theoretical skills
and put them into practice through experiential learning opportunities.
One such opportunity is through the local justice systems like the district courts
throughout the North Shore. In these programs, students gain practical skills to
further their understanding of sociologys importance in the community.
In this media kit you will find more examples like these of local student
involvement through service learning, student course work, and internships that
students complete. We are sure you will see that though the sociology department
at Salem State is small, it has great impact on the students and the larger
community.
