Venn Diagrams When students construct Venn Diagrams, they engage in higher-order thinking. These diagrams create a concrete visual that allow students ‘to compare and contrast elements of text. They can be used with fiction and nonfiction (expository and narrative) texts. Further, they can be used in any curricular area (science, social studies, math, language, music, art, pe., etc.). Venn Diagrams can be created several ways 1. Give students long pieces of rope or string and have them form overlapping circles. 2. Hula hoops are perfect because the circle is built-in! 3, Allow students to draw or paint the circles. To create a Venn Diagram, form two overlapping circles. Then, decide the two elements to be compared and contrasted. For example, if you want to compare the traditional version of The Three Little Pigs to The. True Story of the Three Little Pigs, have the students indicate the similarities of the stories in the middle of the diagram (where the circles overlap). Then have the students indicate the differences between the stories under the appropriate headings. Traditional Modern, Item I Same characteristics Item 2
