"Common
Misconceptions of Critical Thinking." Journal of Curriculum Studies 31.3 (1999):
269-83. Web.
In this paper they analyze three widely-held ideas of critical thinking, as one or more skills, as
mental processes, and assets of procedures. Each view is misleading or unhelpful. Some who
write about critical thinking seem to muddle all three. Together, they have led to the view that
critical thinking is best taught by practicing it.
Becoming proficient at critical thinking itself involves, among other things, the acquisition of
certain sorts of knowledge.
Celuch, Kevin, and Mark Slama. "Teaching Critical Thinking Skills for the 21st Century: An
Advertising Principles Case Study." Journal of Education for Business 74.3 (1999):
134-39. Web.
The journal describes how to teach business using critical thinking methods and how to assess
elements of critical thinking including standards for judging it. Illustrates teaching methods,
materials, and student activities for a course using a critical thinking approach to advertising
principles.
Therefore, students learning is enhanced when they are actively involved in improving their
thinking, that is, becoming more effective critics of their thinking
Cosgrove, Rush. "Critical Thinking in the Oxford Tutorial: A Call for an Explicit and Systematic
Approach." Higher Education Research & Development 30.3 (2011): 343-56. Web.
This paper summarizes a study focusing on the extent to which the Oxford tutorial fosters critical
thinking in students. In doing so, it aims to contribute to a largely ignored area of research
regarding teaching pedagogy and classroom practice. The results of this study reveal that
participating tutors were primarily concerned with fostering students abilities to clarify central
questions, define key terms and question important.
As with any skill set, if students are to develop the ability to think critically, they must grasp
what that entails, they must be given guidance as to how they should practice it and they must be
given time to develop their proficiency in it.
