Teachers Guide to Behaviour Management

The young people of today have bad manners. They scoff at authority and lack respect.

(Socrates)

Education does not mean teaching people to know what they do not know; it means teaching them to
behave as they do not behave.

(John Ruskin, author, poet and artist)

Positive discipline is to do with guidance and instruction; to teach and enhance a social order where
rights and responsibilities are balanced.
(Bill Rogers Behaviour Management: A Whole-School Approach)
This is a checklist of recommended features, against which individual classroom practice can be
measured. The intention is to facilitate a consistency of approach, essential to good discipline.
PART A: THE LESSON
Share learning intentions ad success criteria with pupils
Display the learning intentions visually throughout the lesson
Provide pupils with positive, constructive feedback
Vary the type of teaching approaches adopted to accommodate preferred learning styles
of pupils
Use encouragement and praise to establish a climate of confidence
Expect and reward achievement
PART B: MANAGING PUPIL BEHAVIOUR / ATTITUDES
Display classroom rules prominently
Establish clear expectations and consequences of non-compliance
Avoid the use of idle threats and repeated warnings
Reinforce the idea of choice in unacceptable behaviour
Provide the pupils with the opportunity to make a different choice
Attempt to defuse or de-escalate situations of potential conflict
Avoid ridicule and potentially offensive sarcasm
Focus on the behaviour, not the person behaving unacceptably
Avoid leaving pupils in corridors for longer than a few minutes

THE USE OF SANCTIONS

Pupils who make the choice not to follow classroom rules should be made aware of the
consequences of that choice. These consequences should be seen by pupils as natural outcomes of
behaviour, not as arbitrary punishments by the teacher.
There are certain key points relating to sanctions, from the teachers point of view:

Sanctions do not have to be severe to be effective

Sanctions should be organized into a clearly recognizable hierarchy

Action at Classroom Level

Informal correction

Moving seat within the classroom

Removal of privileges

Issuing of punishment exercises

Action outside the Classroom

Discussion with pupil to address behaviour modification
