Barcelona Discourse Community
As discussed in my discourse community blog being a soccer fan is a discourse community. But
to get in to more detail Ive decided to talk about a specific discourse community within a discourse
community. Boom mind blowing isnt it? Anyways Ive decided to talk about the discourse community
of being a Barcelona fan. Barcelona is a Spanish club team in Liga BBVA and are currently in first place.
Being a Barcelona fan is a discourse community because its more in depth than just being a fan of ones
country during the world cup. Unless youre an actual fan, you dont just turn on the TV and watch a
Barcelona game. Soccer as a whole can be considered a discourse community even though it is the most
global sport in the world, but on a select few are Barcelona fans and we make up the Barcelona fan
discourse community.
Going off of Swales characteristics discourse communities have a set of goals. As Barcelona
fans, we want to see our team continue our dominance and beat powerhouse rival Real Madrid for first
place. As far as intercommunication fans communicate through chat rooms, message boards, and many
fans subscribe for news and updates for the team. When it comes to language its mostly just,
understanding the rules of soccer and the players on the team. A lot of Barcelona fans are actually from
Barcelona so they speak Spanish. This community definitely has experts and newbies and most of that
has to do with knowing stats and all of the players. The more popular players such as Lionel Messi, and
Neymar are known from the world cup and because they are two of the most publically known soccer
players in the world. To become an expert you must watch games regularly and be aware of the players
on the team and the new transfers coming in.
