RWS 1301 Professor Kinley November 10, 2014 Response 14
In Nancy Sommers article, Revision Strategies of Student Writers and
Experienced Adult Writers, she discusses the difference between an experienced writer and a student writer. Sommer was making several studies for over three years in order to find the difference between these two types of writers. She did a research with 20 freshmen and 20 adult writers from Boston and Oklahoma City. A writer from both groups had to write three essays and revise the essays. After the research, Sommer interviewed the person who wrote the essays. She discovered that inexperience writers (student writers) revise their work constantly and experience writers (adult writers) have a reader in mind. According to Sommer, people should revise their work after the first or second draft. After reading the article I realize that this research is very true. Students feel the urge to check their essays constantly before turning them in. For example, in my RWS 1301 Im writing a research paper and every time I have to turn in part of my research paper I visit the Writing Center because I want my paper to be exceptional. Theres a reason of why they are called experienced writers, they have enough experience to write a good book, essay, journal, article, etc. According to Sommer, she mentioned that writing needs to be more like a speech.
